The NEW 80's

Simply put- i'm pretty much a self diagnosed jack of all trades but master of none. But the one that i'm most confident in is music. Eclectic might be the best adjective, so chances are not all of it will grab you, but i've got something here for everyone.

So here's the first blog in a series of the latest music i highly recommend checking out. Go to Itunes and listen to the 30 second previews. Let me know what you think too... anxious for feedback.

Category 1: the 80's are back with a rockin twist. Didn't think it'd ever happen- much less that i would enjoy it, but i'm hooked!

Shiny Toy Guns- "Le Disko"
Heard this on the radio a month ago and searched it out. Also try "Don't Cry Out" which starts off more as a ballad with a nice synth background beat then picks up. Reminds me a lot of the next band on the list....

The Sounds- "Tony The Beat"
First heard this song when Ross showed me it's video.. which he shot. I've really jumped on the bandwagon with this one. "Ego" is a great song with a biting opening line that carries through. "Night after Night" is a softer song and "Living in America" has more of a rock element. "Painted by Numbers" is the one that gets stuck in my head the most though. "Much too Long" is freakin good too.

CSS "Music is my hot hot sex"
This might be more electronic than 80's reborn, but its going here anyways. Ross actually mentioned the song "Alala" to me yesterday. It's got a strong chorus, but takes more than 1 listen to get into i think. I was hooked with "Music is my hot hot sex" and "Lets make love and listen to death from above" right away. Interesting song titles, but don't let that scare you away. :) 'Let's make love..." has a soul funk intro that i've missed. Lionel Richie sang "All NIght long" last night on the AMA's and rocked the house harder than anyone else, hands down!

Spektrum "Don't be Shy"
Found this on Itunes a while back. I think it was a free one- but i definitely would have paid for it. Don't really know what to write about it other that the synth pop aspect is great.

Midwest Product "Swamp"
Pretty much solely electronic. No words to this one, which generally puts it in the mood music category for me- but this has a strong enough driving beat with counter melodic strumming that its pretty moving (minute 2:30-3:00). Reminds me a lot of an old Buckethead album i had called "Electric tears". He went on to hold a brief stint with Guns N Roses :) I also have "Easter Surrenders" from Midwest Product, which i think is fairly mediocre.

Teddybears "Cobrastyle"
This one may not totally fit in this genre either, but so be it. Tob's friend Ace directed a video for this song. Great
video Strong and catchy hook.

Junior Boys "In the Morning"
This one was a single of the week on Itunes and its pretty stellar. A layered, building intro with a strong driving chorus. That's all i got on this one. Get it.

Ladytron "Destroy everything you touch"
Found this one through miles of aimless ITunes wandering. Not too much to explain. It either gets you or it doesn't. Personally i really like the driving beat, which you might find to be a fairly constant theme.

Hot Chip "Playboy"
Three words when first listening to this song... WAIT FOR IT!!! If you think its too slow to start, please hang in there. I was ready to dismiss it completely but can't get over it now. Unreal. Also check out "Over and Over" but i think "playboy" is the best by far.

So that's it for now. More to come for sure.

genres to come:
country/bluegrass/folk
pop/rock
